I have had a long standing passion for working with the elderly.  Whether for specific goals of loss, dementia or isolation, I have a deep respect for their wisdom and experience that is often challenged with increasing vulnerability.  Loss of spouse and cherished relationships, home/community, functions, and identity may be a significant part of elderly life. Short term support can be affirming and enhance the quality of life. From a strength based approach, I can help with identifying current internal supports such as personality traits, coping mechanisms, spiritual beliefs, and daily life habits.  All of these are essential but often forgotten during a time of transition.  Allowing time for life review, identifying values, exploring strengths/fears and encouragement can help establish short term goals to ease transitions and enhance daily living – either through verbal or nonverbal expression.  I have a strong understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease from my years working as an Art Therapist with dementia patients, and in my work with the Memories in the Making Program with the Alzheimer’s Association. Creating art can bypass the limiting effects of this disease and provide a direct connection to that person.
